San Mao - Book Cover Series

The idea is to create three book covers as part of a series for a specific author. Each design will encompass the front cover, spine, back cover, and interior flaps. The challenge lies in ensuring that all elements harmonize both individually and collectively across the series.

I have redesigned one of my favorite Chinese author San Mao’s book cover series. In San Mao’s writings, the Sahara Desert is often depicted as a mysterious and poetic place, filled with her longing for freedom and romance. This cover design, depicting the desert hills forming a woman’s profile, symbolizes the intertwining of San Mao’s life with the Sahara, showing the connection between the author and the landscape she so deeply loved.

By adjusting individual letters, I allow the type to follow the curved lines of my illustrations for a soft and whimsical feel.
